Relive the Fun of Vacation Bible School

Be well, be happy, and be there

Free and for kids of all ages. (meaning a class for adults as well).
Learn, do crafts, enjoy games and  refreshments.

      August 9-13, 6:30-8:30 pm.

Frequently Asked Questions about vacation Bible school at

                               Westminster Presbyterian Church

            WHEN? 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mon-Fri, Aug. 9-13

WHERE? Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4601 W. Lake Mead Blvd., between Rancho and Decatur.

WE DON’T GO TO THAT CHURCH. CAN WE COME?

Westminster welcomes anyone to all events including Sunday services and vacation Bible school.
It is especially common that people attend  or bring their children to a church’s vacation Bible school
even though they ordinarily attend some other church, or ordinarily do not attend church at all.

I CAN’T COME EVERY NIGHT. CAN I LEAVE MY CHILDREN THERE AND PICK THEM UP LATER?

Your children must be accompanied by and registered by a responsible adult on the first night, which will require
an address, phone number, and name of a parent or guardian. Once the child is registered you may leave your
child there, but you must pick up the child at 8:30 p.m., when the evening’s session ends.

However, we have a class and activities for adults and encourage you to stay for that class if you can.

MY YOUNGEST CHILD IS A TODDLER. CAN HE COME?

Yes. There are classes for children of all ages from nursery through junior high, and for adults.

WILL ANYONE ASK ME FOR MONEY?

Vacation Bible school is free. But because many parents wish their children to learn that giving is part of
              the Christian life, the customary plate will be passed for voluntary donations. Any donation is appropriate;
children may contribute a single coin. Many people give more; many give nothing.

WILL ANYONE ASK US TO JOIN THE CHURCH?

We might if you look interested, but we’ll try not to be obnoxious in doing it.

           WHAT IS THE DRESS CODE?

No code; most people wear casual summer clothing. Children will be playing games and doing crafts.
Bible schools are less dressy than church services.

DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BRING ANY SUPPLIES?

           Supplies are provided.

           WILL FOOD BE SERVED?

Casual refreshments, not a full meal.

           HOW ARE STUDENTS ‘GRADED?”

If your child goes to heaven in about 80 years, she passed.

More seriously, this kind of school is simply a voluntary learning experience intended to be fun.
Students are recognized for their efforts to learn about Christianity, but do not “pass,” “fail,” or
receive letter grades. Making such an effort is itself a success.

I HAD ANOTHER QUESTION NOT ON THIS LIST. WHO CAN I CALL ABOUT THAT?

           Call the church at 648-6437.

Remember how much fun vacation Bible school was when
you were a kid, and summer boredom had set upon you?
It was a welcome respite, enough like school to hold your
attention, but unlike it in lacking the pressure to make good
grades, or being required by law to be there six hours a day.
Who would have thought learning could be so much fun?

And why should kids have all the fun?  Save the weekday
evenings August 9-13 to return to those thrilling days of
yesterday when Westminster resumes its traditional summer
Bible school.  This year we're inviting adults to come, not
only as volunteers to help children learn, but also as students,
enjoying the games and fellowship and learning just as they did
         years ago.

We have selected a "Rain Forest" theme for this year's event,
and Melva O'Neill, a very experienced guide of safaris into the
world of Vacation Bible Schools, is already organizing the
expedition.   You can venture into this world as a song leader,
a story teller, a teacher or assistant, a crafts teacher or assistant,
or simply a student exploring the "Rain Forest" of God's word.

Take a look at the opportunities on the sign-up sheet that has
probably appeared already on the table at the back of the church.
Ask Melva or A.D. Hopkins what you can do.  Remember many
hands make light work, and lighthearted work keeps you young.

Remember also, it's more fun if you bring a friend.  Is there an
unchurched child or adult in your life?  Is there one who is simply
bored?  You can help that person, perhaps a great deal, by inviting
that person to the fun and fellowship of five summer evenings at
          Westminster.

Session Report

Session met in June to report on recent events and plan for the remainder of the summer.   Different pastors have agreed to preach for a month at a time until a new pastor is installed.  The choir is vacationing for the summer with special music –solos, duos, groups and instrumentalists being featured in their place.   The pastor search committee is at the stage of trying to determine which of the persons who have applied will best suit our needs.  They will be listening to sermon tapes and conducting phone interviews to help with the decision.  Vacation Bible School August 9-13th will take a lot of effort and promotion.  The picnic in the mountains is scheduled for August 8th following church service.    Two air conditioners needed repairs.  At the date of the meeting the sound system was announced to be up and ready for the following Sunday.  The security system is in place and will be operational shortly.  Check the improvements to the kitchen cabinets.  Rex Beckworth is even adding new cabinets to fill the space around the new oven.   The men’s club will meet the first Saturday of each month and the Thursday night study group continues to meet as does the 9 am adult and children’s Sunday School classes.  Mission Interpretation will hold the annual book sale in August so books can be brought into the old library area anytime.

and we ended the month with a balance of $17,563.

  Operating Fund         Designated Fund  Total
Beginning Balance     $13,761   $16,530  $30,291

Expenditures   5,506 3,134 8,640
May Ending Balance $17,563     $13,998   $31,561

 Scripture for June/July

"Rejoice in the Lord always, again I will say, Rejoice.  Let your
gentleness be known to everyone.   Do not worry about anything,
but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God,
which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and
your minds in Christ Jesus.  Finally. beloved, whatever is true,
whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever
is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence
and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and
heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you...I know
what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty.  In any
and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and
of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need.  I can do
all things through him who strengths me.  In any case, it was kind
of you to share my distress...To our God and Father be glory forever,
and ever.  Amen.  The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your
spirit."  Philippians 4:4-23
